Who needs the annual renewal process
Microsoft currently applies the renewal assessment process to eligible associate, expert, and specialty certifications. Fundamentals credentials are specifically described as not expiring.
How the window works
The free online assessment becomes available during the six months before expiration. Passing extends the certification one year from the current expiration date.

Check the credential in your Microsoft Learn certification profile for eligibility and the actual renewal window. The assessment is open-book and unproctored under the current policy.
