What Is a CEU?

A CEU is a continuing-education unit. Under the IACET definition, one CEU represents ten contact hours of participation in an organized continuing-education experience.

CEU stands for continuing education unit. Under the IACET definition used on this site, 1 CEU represents 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing-education experience.

CEU is a unit, not simply one hour

A common mistake is reading “1 CEU” as “1 hour.” Under the IACET relationship, 0.1 CEU corresponds to 1 contact hour and 1.0 CEU corresponds to 10 contact hours.

A CEU does not guarantee acceptance

A licensing board, employer, or certification body can apply its own provider, subject, documentation, or activity rules. Converting the time correctly does not prove the receiving program will award credit.

How to verify a CEU

Check the provider documentation for the stated unit, confirm whether it is using the IACET-style definition, and then verify that your credential authority accepts the provider and activity.
